Race Report: Cherry Pie 2011

Napa, California; February 6, 2011

While most of the USA was watching some football game, the women of the Touchstone Climbing Cycling team came out to pedal fast at the traditional NCNCA season opener, the Cherry Pie Criterium. Carol Irving, Heather Nielson & Elis Bradshaw arrived to clear skies and unseasonably (but appreciated!) warm temperatures.

After saying hello to competitors they hadn’t seen in months, a thorough warm-up & a quick refill of water bottles – not usually a requirement for a February race – the team lined up at the front of the race. They were joined by the usual suspects, riders from Webcor/Alto Velo, VanderKitten, Metromint, Peanut Butter & Co./2012, Primal/Map My Ride and an unknown rider in a Swiss National Team kit. Note to self: when a rider shows up in a national team jersey, she probably means business.

Sure enough, the Swiss rider (national champion on the track Pascale Schnider) got away from the field & by the end of the race managed to put about 30 seconds on the field by herself. She definitely earned the victory on the day. Touchstone patrolled the front of the race & went with some efforts to bridge, but when lap cards showed five to go it was clear that the win was up the road. A few riders tried to get away for second place and Elis made an attempt with one lap to go but could not get clear of the field. Nearing the finish Carol came to the front and strung out the field. It was a tough race, and though we missed the podium this time we still had a great start to the season.

Our next race will be the Bicycles Plus Early Bird Criterium on February 12th. We will race at 12:30pm; stop by & cheer us on!

Thanks to all of our sponsors — we couldn’t have done it without you!
